Overview

The School of Environmental Sciences (SES), formed in 2009 through the merger of the departments of Land Resource Science and Environmental Biology, integrates physical and life sciences to address environmental issues in agricultural, forest and aquatic ecosystems.

To probe new and vital areas of study amid regional and global environmental change, research and teaching integrate entomology, toxicology, microbiology and pathology and examine interactions between organisms and their environment and the physical aspects of land as a resource.

Encompassing a diverse interdisciplinary group, the School of Environmental Sciences is a strong fit with the university’s priorities on land, food and the environment.

Education

The School of Environmental Sciences offers undergraduate majors in:
Ecology – B.Sc. in Environmental Sciences
Environmental Biology – B.Sc.
Environmental Economics & Policy – B.Sc. in Environmental Sciences
Environmental Management – Bachelor of Bio-Resource Management

Environmental Science - B.Sc. in Environmental Sciences
Environment & Resources Management – B.Sc. in Environmental Sciences

Graduate programs leading to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. cover:

Plant pathology
Soil and the chemical, physical and biological interactions between lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere

Research

Research programs in the School of Environmental Sciences focus on agroecosystems, aquatic ecosystems, climate and meteorology, environmental entomology, environmental geology, environmental microbiology, environmental toxicology, forest ecosystems, and soils.

The School leads national strategic research networks funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC):  the Bioconversion Network; and CANPOLIN (Canadian Pollination Initiative).

Faculty, staff and students of the School of Environmental Sciences collaborate to advance and head a number of service-related enterprises:

~ Centre for Land and Water Stewardship
~ Controlled Environment Systems Research Facility and its Space Advanced Life Support Agriculture Program
~ Honey Bee Research Lab
~ University of Guelph Insect Collection
