Bazinga! It's the OAC Good Times Banquet

January 27, 2011

The annual OAC Good Times Banquet rocked Country Heritage Park on Saturday, January 22.  Over 200 people attended the event, including faculty, alumni, and students from the agriculture, animal biology, environmental science, food science and BBRM programs.

Elliott Miller spoke towards the end of the program, and used the opportunity to reflect on his accomplishments as the Student Federation of OAC president for 2010-2011.  Miller skilfully drew on tradition and Aggie Spirit while reminding his audience of the opportunities and possibilities of OAC, a theme reinforced by Andy Robinson, Chair of Animal and Poultry Science.  Robinson used the iconic OAC leather jackets to reflect on the College’s traditions, weaving together past, present and future with pride and reminding those present of the opportunities for leadership the College offers.

Students honoured John Walton, professor in Animal and Poultry Science and well-loved mentor for his role in the Dairy Challenge and Animal Reproduction courses.  Walton’s acceptance speech was heartfelt and inspirational, drawing laughter from his audience by announcing that his word of the year is “Bazinga” – a pop culture term that sums up the cleverness of scientists.

The OAC Alumni Foundation presented two cheques in support of current and future students.  Bruce Christie (OAC ‘58) president, presented $13,000 for the OAC Learning Trust, and Dwight Greer (OAC ‘72) treasurer, presented $10,000 on behalf of the OAC Class of ’53 to support liaison and student recruitment.

Associate Dean (external) Rene Van Acker was one of many satisfied party-goers. “Attending the Good Times Banquet gives me hope and confidence in the future of OAC because of the enthusiasm of the students and their love of and dedication to the College.”

“The Aggie Spirit in each of the students at the Good Times Banquet shows promise for the future success of our college” said Miller.  “The strong ties and life-long relationships that the students have created with each other exemplify the importance of holding events such as this annual tradition.  I am proud to be in OAC, and will value what I have learned within the OAC for the rest of my life.”
