Dropping Courses
All students can drop courses using WebAdvisor unless they are withdrawing from the semester. |
When students are dropping courses it is important that they double check to confirm that the course has been removed from their record. To do this, students can go back to the "Student Menu" and click on "Class Schedule". The changes that were made should appear there. If they don't, try exiting WebAdvisor and re-entering, and then click on "Class Schedule" again to determine if the course has been removed.
If a student is taking a course through Distance Education, they should check that the course has been deleted in the course list since Distance Education courses do not show up on the schedule grid.
Students should note that Desire2Learn (D2L) is only updated periodically, and if a course is still listed on D2L, it does not mean you are still enrolled.
Students cannot drop their last course (or withdraw from the semester) on WebAdvisor. To do this, students must fill out a Withdrawal form which requires the signature of their Program Counsellor. It is recommended that students meet with their Program Counsellor to discuss withdrawing from all classes (before they do so), to explore their options and to discuss processes involved. Withdrawal forms are available in the BBRM Program Counselling offices or at Student Client Services, on the third floor of the University Centre at the Guelph Campus.
Types of Courses
One-Semester Courses
Students are allowed to drop one-semester courses up to the 40th class day. Check Section III of the Undergraduate Calendar (Schedule of Dates) for the specific drop date. Students will not be permitted to drop a one-semester course after the deadline.
Two-Semester Courses
Students are allowed to drop two-semester courses up to the last day of the "add" period in the second semester. See Section III of the Undergraduate Calendar (Schedule of Dates) for specific dates. Students will not be permitted to drop a two-semester course after the deadline.
Six-Week Summer Session Courses
These courses have different drop deadlines and refund schedules. Please refer to the Undergraduate Calendar and the Registrar's Office for details.
Refunds
Refunds may be available to students depending on when they drop classes and how many classes are dropped. The amount of the refund decreases incrementally as the semester progresses. For the refund schedule please refer to Section VI, Schedule of Fees, of the Undergraduate Calendar.
The government requires that universities report enrollment each semester after the 40th class day. After this date, the University must justify any changes made to the enrollment lists with documentation. For this reason, students are permitted to drop courses after the deadline only in extenuating circumstances. Employment and not receiving grades until after the deadline are not considered grounds for consideration. If a student feels they have grounds for a late drop, or if they are having difficulties in a course, dropping may not be the only option. It is recommended that students meet with their Program Counsellor to discuss their options.
