Deferred Privileges and Exams
A deferred privilege is the opportunity for a student to complete a final exam, final assignment, or end of work term report after the end of a semester. A student may be eligible for a deferred privilege if they have experienced a medical, psychological or compassionate event that prevented them from completing the semester on time. A deferred privilege may be granted in the form of a deferred exam or a deferred condition.
To request a deferred privilege please contact your Program Counselling office to fill out a request form and to find out more about a deferred privilege.
Probationary Status
Students will be placed on probation if they do not satisfy the university requirements for continuation of study. There are specific conditions under which a student is allowed to continue studying on Probationary Status.
Request for Academic Consideration
Students may request academic consideration if they have experienced an unforeseen event that has affected their academic performance. Academic consideration may be granted through: an extended deadline, a deferred exam, a late drop of a course(s) (with or without failure), withdrawal from a semester (with or without academic failure), or permission to continue on probationary status.
Required to Withdraw
Students may be required to withdraw from the University in cases of academic misconduct or when academic performance does not meet the University of Guelph regulations.
Strategies to Ensure Academic Success
If you are struggling, you might want to consider some of these strategies that have helped other students succeed.
Voluntary Withdrawal
A student may decide not to attend any particular semester after they have completed the course selection process. If this is the case, then they must notify the University that they intend not to attend. Non payment of tuition and fees is not appropriate as a method to withdraw from the semester.
Students considering withdrawal after classes are started are required to meet with their Program Counsellor to discuss options and implications of this process.
