Rural Studies

The PhD in Rural Studies program focuses on sustainable rural communities, those characterized by long-term well-being based on the integration of economic, social and environmental factors in their planning and activities. There are four areas of emphasis:

  • Environment and sustainability
  • Social structure and processes
  • Human resource development
  • Sustainable rural economic development

The objective of the program is to prepare specialists who can assume leadership roles in dealing with problems and opportunities in rural communities.

Participating units from OAC include the School of Environmental Design & Rural Development (Landscape Architecture, Capacity Development & Extension, Rural Planning & Development).
