OAC Entrepreneur Launches One-of-a-Kind Horticultural Expo

September 1, 2011

Inspired by the World Agricultural Expo he attended several years ago in Talare, California, Jordon Underhill (DAgr ’01) set out to create his own unique version – a showcase of the most innovative technology, equipment and products available to growers in today’s horticultural sector. His efforts have come to fruition with the launch of Canada’s first Fruit & Veg Tech X-Change.

From September 1-3, this outdoor horticulture trade show will connect producers across the province and more than 180 exhibitors serving the row crop, tobacco, orchard, vineyard and greenhouse sectors at a 200-acre venue on the shore of Lake Erie near Simcoe, Ontario.

“We know September can be a busy time for producers depending on the season, but progressive producers will make the time to come,” said Jordon Underhill, founder and general manager of the X-Change, and owner of ROI Events Management. “Together, we’re building a Canadian showcase we can all be proud of. The leaders in the industry have answered with tremendous support and will display and demonstrate the latest and best technology and products on the market.”

The show’s first two days will focus on professional development and networking workshops exclusively for producers. On Saturday, the X-Change will welcome more commercial-sized producers and the growing segment of what Underhill describes as “weekend farmers”. There will be a massive Ontario-grown farmers market, live equipment auction and educational events, including the 4-H Ontario Passport Challenge.

“For growers, the X-Change is a rare opportunity to see and experience all the specialized equipment they need, in action, all in one location,” says Underhill. “It’s also an opportunity for consumers who want to know how the local food movement is driving technology.”  For example, growers interested in green energy can visit Sun Harvest X-PO, a special showcase within the trade show that will feature over 20 solar power providers showing their panel technologies in operation.
