LA Students Take the Lead at OSSGA Annual Competition

February 25, 2011

Once again, Landscape Architecture students in OAC's School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (SEDRD) made a clean sweep at the Ontario Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (OSSGA) Student Design Competition, winning the top four of five prizes. The design competition challenges student teams to prepare three panels demonstrating existing site conditions, progressive rehabilitation and final rehabilitation of a given site. This year, the site was the LaFarge Canada Guelph Plant, located just west of the City of Guelph. A jury from the OSSGA Community Relations and Rehabilitation Committee reviewed the submissions and awarded cash prizes. The prizes were awarded at the annual OSSGA general meeting on February 17, with an introduction and thank you from the Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Linda Jeffrey. SEDRD's third-year design studio took on the project this past fall semester, with Shirley Hall and Prof. Karen Landman as instructors.

OSSGA is a non-profit industry association representing over 250 sand, gravel, and crushed stone producers and suppliers of valuable industry products and services. Collectively, its members supply the majority of the approximately 172 million tonnes of aggregate consumed annually in the province to build and maintain Ontario’s infrastructure needs. OSSGA works in partnership with government and the public to promote a safe and competitive aggregate industry contributing to the creation of strong communities in the province. The OSSGA exists to promote the wise management of Ontario’s aggregate resources in a manner that is conducive to conserving the natural and social environment while maintaining a healthy and competitive aggregate industry.
