New Food Science Chair Appointed

Art Hill, associate professor, commences a five-year term as chair of Food Science, effective April 1, 2009.
Hill holds BSc, MSc and PhD degress from the University of Guelph. He joined the Food Science department as a research assistant in 1980 and was appointed assistant professor in 1985.
His primary research interests are milk composition and analysis, cheese technology, and nutritionally functional milk products. A practical outcome of his work is a more equitable raw milk pricing formula, which benefits Canadian dairy farmers and processors. He was a member of the team that developed Omega-3 milk, now marketed as Dairy Oh! A past recipient of the OAC Extension Award and past president of UGFA, Hill’s teaching includes technical communication to both graduate and undergraduate classes, while other involvements include curriculum development and assessment.
“I am looking forward to enhancing the global reputation of the department of Food Science and increasing its capacity to do and communicate food research, particularly in the areas of food safety and nutritional functionality,” says Hill.
His wife, Margaret, is a social worker, and they have a blended family of eight sons, six daughters-in-law and five grandchildren
