Focus on Animal Welfare - OAC Public Lecture, March 11

The Winter 2008 session of OAC’s public lecture series concludes on Tuesday, March 11 with the 2008 F.W. Presant Memorial Lecture. Dr. Joy Mench, a professor in the Department of Animal Science and the Director of the Center for Animal Welfare at the University of California, Davis., will speak on the topic of “Laying Hen Welfare: Scientific, Consumer and Industry Perspectives.” The OAC Alumni Foundation supports this lectureship with funds raised from the family and friends of Fred Presant.

This event is open to the public: there is no charge for admission. OVC Lifetime Learning Centre is located just off Gordon Street between College Avenue and Stone Road: access via McGilvary Road. Parking is available directly adjacent to the building; there is no charge for parking after 5:00 p.m.

About the speaker:
Joy Mench received her PhD in Ethology (Animal Behavior) from the University of Sussex in England in 1983. She conducts research on the welfare of animals, especially poultry and laboratory animals. She has published more than 100 papers, book chapters, and books on these topics, and has given many invited presentations to national and international audiences. Her research focuses on understanding social and abnormal behaviors in animals and in evaluating and improving animal management practices and housing environments.

The OAC Public Lecture Series features distinguished speakers on topical issues related to agriculture, food, the environment and rural communities in Canada and around the world. The series promotes better understanding of the challenges and opportunities of rapid change and global connectivity.
