Food Safety in a Global Economy - OAC Public Lecture

The Fall 2007 session of OAC's public lecture series concludes on Tuesday, November 27, with the Alexander Pearson Lectureship in Food Science.

This year's lecture will feature Dr. Robert Brackett, Director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, US Food & Drug Administration.  Dr. Brackett will discuss the topic of food safety in a global economy.

This event is open to the public: there is no charge for admission. OVC Lifetime Learning Centre is located just off Gordon Street between College Avenue and Stone Road: access via McGilvary Road. Parking is available directly adjacent to the building; there is no charge for parking after 5:00 p.m.

About the Speaker:
Robert Brackett serves as the Director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In this role, he provides executive leadership to programs and policies for composition, quality, safety and labeling of foods, food and color additives, dietary supplements and cosmetics.

Prior to joining FDA, Dr. Brackett was a professor at the Center for Food Safety, University of Georgia, where he focused on the effects of processing and packaging on the growth and survival of foodborne pathogens, methods for detection and enumeration of food borne bacterial pathogens, and detoxification of aflatoxins. He is the recipient of numerous research and achievement awards.

Dr. Brackett received his PhD in food microbiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The OAC Public Lecture Series features distinguished speakers on topical issues related to agriculture, food, the environment and rural communities in Canada and around the world. The series promotes better understanding of the challenges and opportunities of rapid change and global connectivity.
